RECIPE: Comforting Mulled Wine
Home Hacks | 05 May 2022
Spicy, sweet and delightfully cosy – the time is now for wrapping your hands around a mug of hot wine.
Is there anything more thrilling than cosying up on the couch with your favourite throw and a warm sip of happiness?
If you've never tried this drink before, make this autumn/winter season the one that you do.
Comforting Mulled Wine | Serves 2-4
Ingredients
- 750ml dry red wine
- 1 peeled, sliced fresh orange
- 1 sliced apple
- 8 whole cloves
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 3 star anise (plus more for garnishing)
- 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or honey
- 1 sliced fresh orange for garnishing
Method
In a medium-sized saucepan, stir together all ingredients to combine.
To ensure alcohol content is retained, bring mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-high heat.
As soon as it simmers, reduce heat to low.
Cover saucepan and simmer for at least 30 minutes or up to 3 hours.
Discard all flavouring ingredients by straining your mulled wine into a jug for serving or pouring or ladling directly into heatproof mugs.
Serve warm and top with garnishes of fresh orange slices and star anise.
Tip: if you're feeling a little extra, add ¼ cup of your favourite liqueur to the mix, such as Cointreau.
